ASTD CONFERENCE REPORT
Lois Webster, the CEO of LearnShare, and Martyn Sloman presented their session "Helping People Learn -- Individual Learning as a Competitive Weapon " Tuesday, June 7.

Use Learning as a Business Weapon: In modern organizations, what people choose to learn is more important than what they are trained to do -- it is the application of effective learning that achieves business objectives. Organizations, therefore, need fully to consider the contribution of learning. Key questions were explored:

  • How well do we understand the link between learning, performance and business success?
  • How much do we know about what motivates employees to learn?
  • Are our interventions which support learning recognized and valued by all in the organization?

TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT TRENDS

Taking The E-train: LearnShare's Lois Webster Weighs in
By Doug Bartholomew, IndustryWeek, June 1, 2005

No one is giving up on the traditional classroom, but manufacturers are finding that e-learning 101 is one class they just can't afford to cut.

"Definitely the direction we are going is to e-learning and technology-enabled learning," says Rick Sturtevant, senior learning consultant at Caterpillar Inc., where the number of online learning lessons taken by employees soared from 30,000 in 2001 to 200,000 last year. Read the whole story:

Uptick in MBA Value: New MBAs expect much higher salaries than in previous years; mirroring the transition to an information-driven economy
By Demir Barlas, Line56, May 31, 2005

A survey conducted by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), sampling nearly 6,000 MBA graduates from 129 U.S. schools, found that the value of the MBA has gone up compared to the past few years.

About half of this year's graduates got jobs right after getting their degrees and, with expected starting average salaries at $84,000 (minus bonuses), it seems as if the MBA has rebounded from its moribund status. By comparison, in 2003, MBA graduates expected to earn about $11,000 less. For the whole story, please click:

Global companies are having problems communicating efficiently and effectively, and learning better English may be the answer. To read the full story, click:

By design, the Summit is only open to LearnShare members and special invited guests. Register soon so you can climb the Summit of Learning Excellence!

We will benefit from each other's practices and the research of selected industry thought leaders. We will share best practices and challenges in transforming training organizations into learning organizations. Based on the belief that, "What people learn is more important than what they are trained to do," the implications to the competencies and structure of the training and development organization is huge!!

Learning and Development organizations are transforming themselves from traditional training to multi-faceted organizations to support real learning. Understand what these organizations are doing that is more than a name shift. Training has been described as an instructor-led, content-based intervention, leading to desired changes in behavior. Learning is described as a self-directed, work-based process, leading to increased adaptive capacity.

  • What are the practices that create a positive climate for learning?
  • What are companies doing to build up learning capabilities?
  • What effective learning interventions are they designing and delivering?

A special thanks to Summit sponsor LearnShare member Comcast Corporation (NASDAQ: CMCSA). Comcast is principally involved in the development, management and operation of broadband cable networks, and in the provision of programming content. The Company is the largest provider of cable and broadband services in the United States, serving more than 21 million cable television customers and more than 6 million high-speed Internet customers.
